Five Steps to Designing Your Monument

Purchasing a headstone or monument is a personal and emotional matter. The headstone you choose will likely remain with the deceased for the rest of time, so it is an important decision that sometimes takes days, weeks, or even months to finalize, depending on the complexity and design of your project.

There are generally five factors you will need to consider when designing a monument, and each one is as important as the next:

Size

Monuments come in all different shapes and sizes. You will need to think about the size of your memorial depending on your headstone of choice, your plot’s location, and your budget.

Size is important because it determines what can be engraved. Larger stones allow for more to be engraved on the stone, or for the designs and letters to be bigger and more readable. Stones can span multiple cemetery plots and even accommodate multiple generations of a family if big enough.

Common Measurements and Dimensions

When considering the size of your monument, it is important to understand what the different dimensions mean.

  • Length is the distance from left-to-right. It is typically the area where families write information about the deceased.
  • Width references how wide your tombstone will be. Monuments that sit upright will generally be thicker than flush or bevel headstones.
  • Height is in reference to the height of your tombstone. This is not a reference to the height of your tombstone from the ground, but rather the height of the object itself.
